From Preparation to Gold: iGEM Thailand–RIS 2025

RIS Ruamrudee International School is proud to celebrate the achievements of the iGEM Thailand–RIS Team 2025, whose dedication to scientific research and innovation culminated in a Gold Award at the iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris. Leading up to the international competition, the team engaged in a series of academic exchanges and presentations that helped shape their work and sharpen their communication on the global stage.

As part of their preparation, RIS was honored to welcome H.E. Mr. Jean-Claude Poimboeuf, Ambassador of France to Thailand, and distinguished members of the French Embassy in Thailand for a special visit on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the school’s Minburi campus. The visit highlighted student-led innovation in science and technology and marked an important moment of encouragement ahead of the global competition.

Distinguished members of the visiting delegation included:

  • H.E. Mr. Jean-Claude Poimboeuf, Ambassador of France
  • Mrs. Muriel Schmit, Attaché for Cooperation in the French Language
  • Mr. Ludovic Andres, Attaché for Scientific and University Cooperation
  • Mr. Théo Dulac, Project Officer for Scientific and University Cooperation (VIA)
  • Mrs. Phiraya Phatthanakhuha, Secretary to the Press Attaché

The visit began with a warm welcome and presentation of RIS by Dr. Jim O’Malley, Head of School, followed by an introduction to the school’s campuses and community. The centerpiece of the morning was the presentation by iGEM Thailand–RIS 2025, a team of high school students preparing to represent Thailand on the world stage.

During the session, the students shared their research on engineering a plastic-degrading enzyme (PETase) from a bacterium into plant tissue—developed as a proof of concept to help reduce the environmental impact of microplastics. The delegation engaged actively with the team, asking thoughtful questions and commending the students for their scientific understanding, creativity, and presentation skills.

Following the presentations, Dr. Jim O’Malley expressed his gratitude to the delegation for their visit and for supporting student innovation and cross-cultural collaboration. The meeting concluded with a tour of the secondary school buildings led by iGEM Thailand–RIS 2025 faculty advisors Ms. Nicole Sabet and Mr. Oliver Fernandez, followed by a closing ceremony, gift exchange, and group photographs at the Peace Pole—symbolizing friendship and cooperation between Thailand and France.

From Preparation to International Recognition

Just weeks later, the iGEM Thailand–RIS Team 2025 competed at the iGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris (October 25 – November 2, 2025), joining teams from universities, high schools, and research institutions around the world. The team was awarded Gold, a testament to their scientific rigor, interdisciplinary collaboration, and commitment to addressing real-world challenges through synthetic biology.

The earlier visit from the French Embassy served as a meaningful milestone in the team’s journey—reinforcing the importance of global dialogue, academic exchange, and international partnerships in advancing student research.

The visit and the team’s subsequent success marked an important step toward future collaboration in science and education between RIS and the French Embassy in Thailand, reflecting the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering global partnerships and empowering students to create positive, real-world impact.

ServICE 15 Inspires Student-Led Action for a Better World

RIS Ruamrudee International School proudly hosted ServICE 15, the annual ServICE Thailand conference, on the weekend of September 20–21, 2025, bringing together students and educators from across Bangkok and beyond to Inspire, Connect, and Empower (ICE) youth to make a difference through meaningful service learning.

This year’s event welcomed student leaders from 12 participating schools, including Aster International School Bangkok, Bangkok Patana School, International Community School (ICS), International School Bangkok (ISB), KIS International School, NIST International School, Raffles American School, Regent’s International School Bangkok, Roong Aroon International School, St. Andrews International School Bangkok, Wells International School, and RIS Ruamrudee.

Over two days, participants took part in keynote talks, collaborative workshops, and “ICE Experiences”—hands-on sessions designed to turn ideas into action. The ICE Experience Showcase, a highlight of the program, allowed student leaders to present their projects and reflect on how their service work has made an impact. Delegates also joined in the long-standing ServICE tradition of forming the letters ICE as a group, symbolizing the shared purpose that unites schools across the network.

Beyond workshops and presentations, connection was at the heart of the conference. Frequent mix-and-mingle sessions, icebreakers, and collaborative activities gave students the chance to build relationships, share ideas, and explore future partnerships. These opportunities reflect the “C” in ICE—fostering lasting inter-school networks that make service initiatives more powerful and sustainable.

The conference also embodied the spirit of inspiration and empowerment. Students were encouraged to think critically about global challenges, learn from one another’s experiences, and find their voice as changemakers. From leading workshops and delivering keynotes to collaborating on action plans, delegates left the event with renewed motivation — and the confidence to take meaningful action in their communities.

RIS Opens Modern Boarding Residence at Redeemer Hall

RIS Ruamrudee International School proudly announces the opening of RIS Residence at Redeemer Hall, its newly renovated boarding facility for secondary school students in Grades 7–12. Open to students from both the RIS Minburi campus and the neighboring affiliate RIS Swiss Section, the facility accommodates up to 60 boarders in a safe, modern, and community-oriented environment.

The upgraded facilities feature bright and cozy bedrooms, updated bathrooms, and inviting study spaces designed to support both independence and academic focus. Shared areas—including common rooms, study lounges, and a dining hall—provide daily opportunities for boarders to connect, collaborate, and grow as a community.

“Our goal is to make RIS Residence feel like a second home,” said Ms. Mindi Dryer, Residence Coordinator. “From the moment students arrive, we want them to feel safe, supported, and excited to be part of a community that grows together.”

Life Beyond the Rooms

The first weeks of Residence life have already been filled with team-building activities and student outings. Boarders tackled rock climbing walls, tested their teamwork skills in an escape room, and enjoyed shopping trips as a group. Orientation days also gave students the chance to connect with their House Parents, meet their roommates, and participate in spirited games and campus tours.

“These shared experiences help students build trust and friendships,” Ms. Dryer noted. “It’s inspiring to see them encourage each other, laugh together, and create memories that will last long after their time in Residence.”

A Growing Community

With daily schedules, supportive staff, and a strong focus on both academics and well-being, RIS Residence ensures that students receive holistic care. The dining hall has quickly become a hub for celebrations, from birthdays to milestones, bringing boarders and staff together like family.

“Living in Residence teaches students independence, but it also reminds them that they are never alone,” Ms. Dryer added. “Our Residence is a place where every student belongs.”

Looking Ahead

The move to Redeemer Hall marks an exciting new chapter for boarding at RIS. Meanwhile, the former boarding facility—Seelos Residence—is undergoing renovation. Once complete, RIS will be able to welcome up to 100 boarding students across both halls, expanding opportunities for young learners to experience the unique benefits of international boarding life.

Boarding at RIS extends the school’s vibrant student life into a supportive living environment, where academics, activities, and friendships thrive together. Nestled on the idyllic Minburi campus, RIS Residence reflects the school’s commitment to cultivating independence, responsibility, and community in every student who calls it home.

A Community Concert in Support of Sarnelli House

On June 1, 2025, students and families representing the RIS Class of 2028 gathered for Kids for Kids: A Charity Concert — an event that brought together music, service, and community spirit. The student-led concert was organized in support of children with disabilities at Sarnelli House in Nong Khai.

The concert reflected RIS’ broader philosophy of connecting student learning to real-world purpose. Through the high school music program, students are encouraged to develop their skills not only through performance but also through collaboration, leadership, and community engagement. Kids for Kids provided an opportunity for students to apply those values while supporting a meaningful cause.

Sarnelli House has long been one of the service learning partners supported through RIS’ connection with the Redemptorists of Thailand. The funds raised from this event—a total of 220,302 THB—will contribute to medical care, nutrition, and daily needs for the children and young adults living under the care of Sarnelli House.

In attendance at the event was Rev. Fr. Puwanai (Ole) Tantikun, C.Ss.R., Chair of the Sarnelli House Foundation Board, who remarked:
“It is always encouraging to see students take initiative not only to perform, but to serve. The support from this event will have a real impact on the children in our care.”

The school recognized the students, families, and supporters who contributed their time and talents to bring the event to life. Appreciation was extended as well to Dr. Perawat Chookhiatti, Managing Director of Siam Music Yamaha, who sponsored the concert venue.

The evening served as a small but meaningful reminder of how music, service, and community often intersect at RIS.
