Being connected helps them reduce the impact of COVID-19 and encourages them to continue with their lives, but it also presents risks and dangers. It is essential that we are all aware of the potential danger that comes when giving students<strong> unprotected access<\/strong> to the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Online Risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Victims of cyberbullying by peers, adults, and strangers\u00a0<\/li><li>Instigators or observers of cyberbullying and peer-on-peer abuse online<\/li><li>Targeted by adults or peers online for sexual purposes through social media, games, and messaging platforms<\/li><li>Seeing harmful content, violence, misogyny, xenophobia, inciting suicide and self harm, pornography, etc.<\/li><li>Sharing personal information and sexual videos or photos of themselves<\/li><li>Developing internet addiction and reduced focus<\/li><li>Giving strangers access to your child through <em>any <\/em>online game or platform (Roblox, Discord) that allows chatting.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.rism.ac.th\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Comp-Lab-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internet Safety Essentials:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Protect Your Child with Tech Fixes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Set up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetmatters.org\/parental-controls\/\">parental controls&nbsp;<\/a><\/li><li>Turn on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetmatters.org\/parental-controls\/entertainment-search-engines\/\">SafeSearch<\/a> in their browser&nbsp;<\/li><li>Set up strict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetmatters.org\/parental-controls\/social-media\/\">privacy settings<\/a> in online apps and games&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazada.co.th\/catalog\/?q=webcam+cover&amp;_keyori=ss&amp;from=input&amp;spm=a2o4m.home.search.go.1125719coSdvAC\">Cover webcams<\/a> when not in use&nbsp;<\/li><li>Turn off the chat function<\/li><li>Keep personal information private, especially from strangers \u2013 some people are not who they say they are!&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Protect Your Child with Adult Supervision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Supervise<\/strong> your child\u2019s online time as you would supervise them in any other social setting.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Keep<\/strong> technology in a public area like the living room. Be careful about leaving children online alone in their bedroom.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Check<\/strong> your child\u2019s internet history and <strong>talk <\/strong>with them about what they do online and who they were with.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Set a <strong>\u201ctechnology curfew.\u201d<\/strong> For example: No tech\/devices\/Wi-Fi after 9 p.m. (Removing devices from the bedroom at bedtime supports healthy sleep patterns in children.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Protect Your Child with Open Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Talk<\/strong> with your child about the importances of reporting inappropriate behavior online. Reporting keeps themselves and others safe.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Tell <\/strong>your child that if they experience something online that makes them feel upset, uncomfortable, scared, or bullied they need to tell a trusted adult (parent, teacher, etc.). They will not get punished for speaking up.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Be alert<\/strong> to signs of distress. Notice if your child is withdrawn, upset, secretive, or seems obsessed with online activities.<\/li><li><strong>Tell RIS<\/strong> if your child is experiencing harm online so that we can intervene.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">See Something, Say Something!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Please <strong>report<\/strong> to your child\u2019s teacher, counsellor, admin or the Designated Safeguarding Lead if your child is experiencing harm online.
