During their recent Bangkok tour, RIS proudly welcomed cello rock group Low Strung<\/a> from Yale University<\/a> for an unforgettable day of music! \"\ud83c\udfbb\"<\/h2>\n

Cello rock group Low Strung from Yale University is renowned for transforming pop\/rock classics into lush musical works of ingenuity and beauty designed exclusively for the cello, ranging from The Beatles to the Eagles to Coldplay\u2026 and much more! \"\ud83c\udfb6\"\"\ud83e\udd18\ud83c\udffc\" The group members are all classically-trained musicians turned rock cello rebels who describe themselves as “orchestra dropouts” and arrange all their material. 2024 is a very special year for Low Strung, with 14 members instead of the usual 12!<\/p>\n

During an all-day visit to RIS on January 10, 2024, Low Strung performed for elementary & secondary schools and hosted Q&A sessions with the students.\u00a0\"\ud83c\udfa4\"\u00a0They also headlined a special after-show charity concert and collaborated with the RIS high school jazz band and the choir group Vivace.\u00a0\"\ud83c\udfb6\"\"\ud83c\udfbb\"\u00a0The event raised funds in support of the Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind<\/a>, a cause championed by RIS\u2019 newly-formed Tri-M Music Honor Society.\u00a0\"\ud83d\udc99\"\u00a0The Yale University undergraduates also hung out for lunch with the Tri-M members, offering inspiration and mentorship to the high school students.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Low Strung’s trip to RIS was hosted by Kula<\/a> Co., Ltd., founded by RIS alumna Ja Kanokewan Wuttithamrong. “After being away from Thailand for over 20 years, it’s so nice to be reconnected to my alma mater,\u201d shared Khun Ja. \u201cI truly have fond memories of RIS! The teachers helped me discover my passion for music, which I love because it\u2019s so emotive and transcends language.”<\/p>\n

Khun Ja strongly feels that nurturing and inspiring the next generation and providing them opportunities to make a difference is now her “reason for being.” Since its inception, Kula has raised over 4 million baht through its\u00a0A Night to Remember<\/em>\u00a0charity concerts and provided educational scholarships for hundreds of underprivileged children across Thailand. She has always\u00a0made sure to involve students<\/a>\u00a0both as performers and volunteers. “Seeing the genuine enjoyment and inspiration we brought to students and witnessing their pride in making a difference was life-changing for me,” she shared<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Thanks to the charity concert with Low Strung, Tri-M was able to raise over 20,000 baht from free-will donations and achieve their goal of purchasing a piano and amplifier for the students at the the Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind. In addition, the high school jazz band and choir group felt pride in their performances and relished being part of the event. “Being able to sing play all together really summed up the message of the event as well\u2014that music brings us together,” said Ms. Sarah Hanson, RIS’ band teacher and Performing Arts head of department. “We all have commonality, and all of those great things, not to mention the experience of getting to play\u00a0with<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the musicians of Low Strung\u2014what a treat!”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
