EARLY CHILDHOOD

(PRE-KINDERGARTEN)

OVERVIEW

The Early Childhood program (Pre-K 2 to Pre-K 4) at RIS provides a joyful, nurturing environment where children learn through exploration, play, and meaningful interaction. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, teachers encourage curiosity, creativity, and collaboration as children develop a sense of wonder about the world around them.

All Pre-Kindergarten teachers are certified in Early Childhood Education and participate in ongoing professional learning to strengthen their practice. Each class is supported by dedicated Instructional Aides, and the team also includes an Atelierista, a creative arts specialist who integrates imagination and visual expression into everyday learning.

Newly renovated classrooms are thoughtfully designed for young learners, offering safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate spaces where children can explore, connect, and thrive.

Pre-K students got to try their hand at holding the water hose with the help of special guests— real-life firefighters!

CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood curriculum at RIS is standards-informed, Reggio-inspired, and built around an emergent approach that honors each child’s unique developmental journey.

Grounded in the Washington D.C. Early Learning Standards, the curriculum provides a strong foundation across developmental domains while allowing flexibility for teachers to design experiences that reflect children’s interests, questions, and needs.

In keeping with Reggio Emilia principles, children are viewed as capable and curious learners who construct knowledge through interaction and play. Teachers observe, document, and reflect on children’s discoveries to plan responsive investigations that connect play with purpose.

While topics may vary from year to year, the program follows a consistent developmental continuum that ensures every child engages in meaningful, age-appropriate learning experiences that foster growth, confidence, and readiness for future success.
