A child is not recommended to withdraw from his or her current school until enrollment at RIS has been confirmed. When seats are limited, students may be placed on a waiting list. Applying or a place on the waiting list does not guarantee placement.
SCREENING & TESTING
PRE-K 2
(RIS EARLY YEARS CAMPUS ONLY):
All applicants will have a developmental observation session with the RIS Early Years Campus administrators. One or both parents must be present for this session. A parent interview will also be held.
PRE-K 3 TO PRE-K 4
All applicants will have a developmental screening session with the School Psychologist. One or both parents must be present for this session. (RIS Early Years Campus sessions are conducted with their campus administrators.)
KG TO GRADE 1
All applicants will have a screening session with the School Psychologist to assess their readiness skills. Grade 1 applicants will also need to take the Kindergarten WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (Kindergarten W-APT) with an ELD teacher to determine whether ELD support is needed. At least one parent should be present. (RIS Early Years Campus sessions are conducted with their campus administrators.)
GRADE 2 TO GRADE 12
Mainstream students will take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test in Reading and Mathematics, as well as a writing test. Students may not use calculators or dictionaries for these tests.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD) STUDENTS
Students who have not been attending a school where English is the language of instruction (for a minimum of 3 years), will take the WIDA-SCREENER Placement Test, which is administered by an ELD faculty member and covers listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
LEARNING
SUPPORT (LS) STUDENTS
Our Learning Support (LS) program is designed to help all students develop the skills they need to access the general school curriculum. Learning Support students succeed in the regular classroom through close collaboration between learning support staff and classroom teachers. LS students who have not had a psychological test within the last 12 months will need to pass a psychological or educational evaluation administered by the School Psychologist.
ADMISSION & ENROLMENT
RIS administrators review a prospective child’s test results and grade-level placement. Once a child is offered admission to RIS, Admissions will arrange for families to meet with the School Director (or a designate). The family receives an acceptance letter, a registration package, an invoice, and other documents necessary for enrollment.
To complete enrollment at RIS, a child must complete the registration process, and the school fees must be paid by the invoice due date.
